กว่า 10 ปีมาแล้วที่ ดร.ภิญโญ พาณิชพันธ์ มองเห็นความสำคัญและผลประโยชน์เกี่ยวพันที่จะตามมาของการค้นพบดาวเคราะห์นอกระบบสุริยะจักรวาล (exoplanet) ก่อนที่การค้นพบจริง ๆ จะเป็นผลให้นักวิทยาศาสตร์ที่ค้นพบได้รับรางวัลโนเบลเมื่อสองวันก่อน ตามข่าวหนังสือพิมพ์นิวยอร์กไทมส์ข้างต้น โดย ดร.ภิญโญ พาณิชพันธ์ มีผลงานร่วมกับ ดร.วชิราภรณ์ ชูพันธ์ นักศึกษาปริญญาเอก (ในเวลานั้น) ของสถาบันนวัตกรรมฯ เกี่ยวกับอุปกรณ์เลียนแบบการค้นหาดาวเคราะห์ นอกระบบสุริยะที่ลงในวารสาร Physics Education 2 ชิ้น โดยวิธี transit method และ radial velocity method ซึ่งจะช่วยให้นักเรียนและนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยให้เข้าใจคำอธิบายและความหมายของการค้นพบอันยิ่งใหญ่นี้เกี่ยวกับดาวเคราะห์นอกระบบสุริยะ ซึ่งกรรมการผู้ตัดสินมอบรางวัลกล่าวถึงความยิ่งใหญ่ของการค้นพบดาวเคราะห์นอกระบบสุริยะนี้ว่า “transformed our ideas about the cosmos.” “เปลี่ยนแปลงความคิดความเชื่อของเราเกี่ยวกับจักรวาล” และ Dr.Debra A. Fischer, ศาสตราจารย์ ทางดาราศาสตร์มหาวิทยาลัย Yale บอกว่า “Completely transformative,” Dr. Fischer said of the discovery. “We are (in) the middle of a scientific revolution that people won’t appreciate until a hundred years go by.” เป็นการค้นพบที่จะนำมาซึ่งความเปลี่ยนแปลงมากมาย และเราอยู่ท่ามกลางการปฏิวัติทางวิทยาศาสตร์ที่คนทั่วไปจะไม่เข้าใจลึกซึ้งจนกว่าอีกร้อยปีผ่านไป
