Assistant Professor Dr. Piyachat Jittam, Director of the Institute for Innovative Learning, Mahidol University, together with Assistant Professor Dr. Namkang Sriwattanarothai, Deputy Director for Education and Network Affairs, and Dr. Julie Flapan, Director of the Computer Science Equity Project at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), who visited Thailand as a Fulbright Specialist for the Institute for Innovative Learning, participated in an academic discussion on sustainability education and climate change.
The meeting was hosted by Associate Professor Dr. Kitikorn Charmondusit, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, together with Dr. Praewa Wongburi, Assistant Dean for Policy, Planning, and International Relations, Dr. Jakkrapol Phantuwongpakdee, Dr. Achiraya Chaichalermpreecha, and Dr. Shreema Rana, who jointly exchanged ideas and approaches for future collaboration.
The discussion focused on strengthening academic collaboration in education, research, and international networking in the areas of Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality. Participants discussed the progress of the Carbon Neutrality Campus (CNC) initiative, which originated from a collaborative network of sustainable universities in Thailand in partnership with the United Nations ESCAP to promote carbon neutrality concepts within higher education institutions. The initiative has since expanded to universities across Asia, as well as schools at the primary and secondary levels, with the goal of promoting sustainability learning from an early age.
The meeting also included discussions on developing networks of “expert educators,” creating micro-credential systems for teachers and educational personnel, and promoting peer mentoring approaches to inspire and expand sustainability learning on a continuous basis.
This meeting reflected the strong collaboration among international academic networks in advancing sustainability education by connecting schools, universities, communities, and global partners to support the development of future generations and society toward carbon neutrality and long-term sustainability.
